Equipping parents to protect their children: Kenosha Co. Sheriff's Dept.'s internet safety initiative

KENOSHA COUNTY (WITI) -- The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department is releasing a new internet safety initiative for parents.

"Computer Cop" is free to the public in Kenosha County.

Computer Cop is a program on a CD that parents can place in their computer to monitor all activity that occurs on the computer 24 hours a day.

The program will catch key words, photographs and even codes or abbreviations used by our children and predators that we as parents don’t always understand.  Parents can even personalize the program to recognize names and key words or phrases that may be of particular importance to your household.

The internet is a dangerous place for children.  Predators are looking for children to stalk online, every minute of every day.  Inappropriate sites and pictures sometimes appear on screens at home with little notice of what content will follow.

Kenosha County Sheriff Bill Beth says he recognizes that parents need a hand keeping up with their children and the people who might want to harm them on the internet.

“I was in Kenosha’s schools for 10 years as a DARE officer teaching our children to be alert and safe, giving them the tools to keep themselves safe," Sheriff Beth said.

The CD’s are free to anyone who lives in Kenosha County.  They can be picked up at the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department (Public Safety Building) at 1000 55th St.
