One dead, two hurt after driver blows through traffic signal, collides with car

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A 27-year-old Milwaukee woman is dead and two others are hurt after a violent collision between two cars on Milwaukee's south side early Wednesday, July 30th. The crash happened near 11th and Mitchell around 3:15 a.m.

Police say a 30-year-old Milwaukee man was driving a car northbound on S. 11th Street when he failed to stop for a red traffic signal at W. Mitchell.

Officials say he slammed into an eastbound car.

After the initial collision, the man who caused the wreck then collided with a building on the northeast corner of 11th and Mitchell. The 30-year-old driver suffered significant injuries as a result the crash and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The second vehicle was driven by a 28-year-old Milwaukee man who also suffered significant injuries. A 27-year-old woman from Milwaukee who was seated in the front passenger seat of the vehicle died at the scene.

The Milwaukee Police Department will refer the case to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office for possible charges should the 30-year-old driver of the first car survive.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday afternoon released its report on the crash.

The Medical Examiner's Office has identified the 27-year-old woman killed in this crash as Jennifer Camacho-Torres of Milwaukee. She was identified at the scene by her husband, who was driving the vehicle they were in at the time of the crash.

The Medical Examiner's Office says there was significant damage to the passenger side of the vehicle -- where Camacho-Torres was sitting, and it was unclear whether the airbag had deployed.

The Medical Examiner ruled Camacho-Torres died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries, and has ruled her death to be accidental.

The Medical Examiner's Office says Camacho-Torres's husband was taken to Froedtert Hospital following the crash, where he was diagnosed with a skull fracture. He was said to be in and out of consciousness.

The Medical Examiner's report says Camacho-Torres' sister-in-law told the Medical Examiner Camacho-Torres and her husband have two children together -- ages nine and two -- though they are not legally married.

The Medical Examiner's Office identifies the other driver as 30-year-old Rafael Ramirez of Milwaukee. He was taken to Froedtert Hospital with head injuries.

Sherry Thoms lives not far from the intersection where the crash happened. On nights when she can't sleep, she sits on her porch. That's where she was early Wednesday morning.

"I heard a big crash, and it scared me pretty well. I just thought something blew up the way it sounded and, like I said, I did not know that it was that bad," Thoms said.

"I still kept continuously hearing sirens like up until this morning. They were still out here until like nine and 10. I really hope and pray that I don't know (the victims)," Sheila Hpocan, who lives in the neighborhood said.
