State Fair goers help fight hunger while getting a sweet deal on admission

WEST ALLIS (WITI) -- Crowds of people poured into the Wisconsin State Fair on opening day, but many of them were bringing something extra.

"It makes you feel good especially because we have good jobs and we can afford everything and we like to help other people," said Judy Ingraham as she walked into the fair.

They were bringing in food to get a sweet deal. From 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. everyone who brought in two non-perishable food items for the Hunger Task Force got into the fair for just $2.

"We're in our 10th year here at the Wisconsin State Fair it's been a fabulous event for us. We've raised more than a million pounds of food to help feed local hungry families," said Hunger Task Force Executive Director Sherrie Tussler.

This time of year the Hunger Task Force sees a spike in childhood hunger, as kids aren't receiving free or reduced price lunches at school. That's why they're specifically asking for food for children.

"What we're looking for are granola bars, we're looking for individually wrapped and packaged childhood snacks, we're looking for canned vegetables, canned fruits, we want infant formula," said Tussler.

The event is sponsored by Wells Fargo who also provided more than 200 volunteers.

"This is one of the favorites of everyone that does volunteering. We're also proud to make a $25,000 donation to the Hunger Task Force. A great day for everyone out here at the fair and a great day for our volunteers to give a little something back to the community," said Wells Fargo Communications Director Anne Schwartz.
