Heavy rain soaks parts of southeast Wisconsin, submerges cars in St. Francis

MILWAUKEE (WITI) — Heavy rain soaked parts of southeast Wisconsin Friday evening, August 1st. It poured so hard that cars in a parking lot near Layton and Whitnall in St. Francis temporarily became submerged in rainwater.

The sudden storms caught many by surprise.

“I’ve seen it rain like that and it’s usually like ‘whoosh’ and that’s it, but it continued and then the hail and then rained again,” said Mary Bell, whose car was stranded in a lot. “It was up to the doors and I didn’t want to start the car with the tailpipe in the water.”

Water also started pooling at the State Fair grounds, where thousands were left searching for shelter.

“We were listening to some awesome music, amazing cover band down there, and it started to thunder and lightning and then it poured, and we sat under there for well more than an hour or so,” said fair-goer Gayle Perilman.

Most people at the fair said the rain didn’t ruin their fun, and several said they plan to come back at least one more time.
