"It is time to come back:" Packers to retire Brett Favre's number, induct him into Hall of Fame

GREEN BAY (WITI) -- The Green Bay Packers officially announced on Monday, August 4th that the team will induct three-time MVP quarterback Brett Favre into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and that the Packers will retire Favre's jersey. Mark your calendars because all of that will happen on Saturday, July 18, 2015.

Monday's announcement featured in-person remarks from Packers Hall of Fame Inc. President Perry Kidder and Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. Bob Harlan, a member of the Packers Hall of Fame Inc. executive committee and chairman emeritus of the Packers, also spoke.

Favre shared remarks via telephone, stating, "I'm truly honored. It's time to come back." He told those gathered at Lambeau Field that "there's no place like it" when referring to Green Bay. He added that he's "speechless."

Packers officials understand demand for the induction ceremony next year will be extremely high. But they say ticket information will not be made available until after January 1st. Officials say there will NOT be a waiting list for the event -- and they urge all Packers fans to be patient -- and NOT call the team offices for information on the events of Saturday, July 18, 2015.

Favre was later asked who he would like to be a part of his induction and number retiring events. Favre named former general manager Ron Wolf and head coach Mike Holmgren. Favre also mentioned it would be great to flip coins with the likes of Bart Starr.

Favre also made the following statement on his website late Sunday:

I'm pleased to announce that I will be returning to Green Bay, Wisconsin in 2015 for induction into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and retirement of my jersey.

It was a tremendous honor to play 16 years for the Green Bay Packers. Now to have my name placed among others such as Starr, Hornung, Kramer, Taylor, Lambeau, Nitschke, Lombardi, Davis, White and Hutson is a special honor that I share with all of my teammates and coaches, and that would not have been possible but for the foresight of Ron Wolf, the greatest GM In the history of the NFL.

I'm truly looking forward to celebrating and sharing this special moment with all of the great fans of the Green Bay Packers.

The Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc. is a nonprofit corporation independent of the Green Bay Packers that guides the Hall as a historic national sports venue and educational resource to the Green Bay community and the state of Wisconsin.

The Hall raises funds through its annual induction banquet, Golf Classic and other events to preserve the history of the Green Bay Packers and expand its archives. Historic memorabilia donated by individuals to the Hall may qualify as tax-deductible gifts.

Originally established in 1967 as a temporary display in the concourse of the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena, the Hall moved into its own facility in 1976 near Lambeau Field.

In 2003, it relocated to the Lambeau Field Atrium. It is currently closed for the ongoing Atrium renovation project and will reopen in 2015.

While the Packers Hall of Fame is closed, the Neville Public Museum in Green Bay hosts a temporary exhibit, “Touchdown!”, with selected and additional never-seen-before items from the Hall’s archives.
