"Be courageous!" All-girls summit works to raise strong female leaders

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee is celebrating 30 years of being the first club to include girls as members. Wednesday they continued their year of celebration with an all-girls summit.

More than one hundred young ladies in middle school and high school spent the day at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for the "Be Courageous G.I.R.L.'S Summit" which stands for growing inspirational and responsible leaders.

Each young woman could choose from a handful of seminars to attend which talked about everything from bullying, to self-esteem to preparing for college.

There was also a guest speaker that addressed the influences of commercials, television and magazines on young women, which is an issue organizers say is especially important to combat.

“We want to make sure that we are balancing with reality, with plans, with goal setting and allowing girls to know you don’t have to conform to those types of behaviors. That you can do what’s right and letting them know that they’re not alone in doing what’s right,” said Denisha Tate, the Chief Operations Officer of The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee.

Over a hundred girls came to the event, free of charge, from different organizations all over the state including the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee.
