"We can do anything boys can do:" See how women pilots inspire Girl Scouts

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- It's a rare sighting over the Waukesha skyline. Two female acrobat pilots will take flight this weekend for Wings over Waukesha Air Show. On Friday, August 22nd a lucky group of Girl Scouts got a sneak peek of all the action.  It's all in hopes of getting more women interested in aviation.

Small planes landing at the Waukesha County airport is nothing new. But having the classic planes on the tarmac, is not something you see everyday.

"They are big and small and everything in between, and they just fascinate me," said 11-year-old Girl Scout, Elizabeth Weske from Hartland.

Local Girl Scouts got a first-hand look at all the planes gearing up for the Wings over Waukesha airshow. This year's focus is "women in aviation."

"We can do anything boys can do, we really can," said Druanne Pierce, from Plane Safe Aircraft Maintenance.

Druanne Pierce is one woman who really knows her planes.

"I work on single engine, twin engine, turbo prop," said Pierce.

Now she owns her own aircraft maintenance company, but her passion for planes started as a teen.

"I remember watching airplanes at Mitchell Field take off and wondering how in the heck do they get off the ground because they are so enormous," Pierce said.

Now Pierce is passing the passion onto other girls. That's why she's sharing her skills and experiences with Girl Scouts, and she isn't alone.

Wings over Waukesha begins Saturday morning, August 23rd.
