Wisconsin DNR considers inland salmon stocking

MADISON (AP) — Wisconsin fisheries officials are considering stocking an inland lake with landlocked Atlantic salmon.

The Department of Natural Resources is weighing a proposal from the Green Lake Coldwater Fish Advisory Committee to stock Big Green Lake in Green Lake County with the salmon for four years.

DNR biologists say some anglers love the fish because it fights hard but they have to consider how stocking would affect other species. They say the salmon could compete with brown trout so current brown trout stocking would have to be suspended for the duration of the salmon project.

The DNR has scheduled a public hearing on the proposal and a draft environmental impact statement for Sept. 9 in Green Lake. The agency hopes to make a decision in October.
