MILWAUKEE (WITI) — Renee Smith, the grandmother accused of leaving a loaded gun within reach of a four-year-old boy who allegedly shot himself in the head, waived her right to a preliminary hearing in a Milwaukee County courtroom on Thursday, September 4th.

Smith faces a charge of second-degree recklessly endangering safety — a felony. Prosecutors say Smith’s grandson accidentally shot himself near 45th & Locust back on March 19th.

A criminal complaint against her says Smith had the gun in a shoebox underneath a bed in a bedroom where the four-year-old boy and other children were playing on the night of the shooting. The boy, named Keyontist, was seriously injured.

The criminal complaint indicates the boy had a bullet hole in his forehead. He was breathing and his eyes were slightly open, but an officer could not find a pulse and started chest compressions on the boy until the Milwaukee Fire Department arrived on scene and took over. The boy was transported to Children’s Hospital by ambulance.

Smith identified the shooting victim as her grandson, for whom she was responsible for providing care at the time of the shooting.

Smith is due back in court to enter a plea to the charge on October 16th.

    there’ve been several incidents over the past year and a half or so, of children getting hold of loaded weapons in their house and shooting, sometimes killing someone with it.

    — 2 yo Caroline Sparks in Kentucky, killed by her 5 yo brother who found a gun – ruled an accident;
    — 2 yo Utah boy killed by his 3 yo sister who found dad’s gun left in the living room – authorities called it a “tragic accident”
    –22 yo Alexandra Santos of S.Carolina killed by her friend’s 6 yo son who found a gun in the backseat of mom’s car – no charges filed 5 months later;
    –7 yo Juliet Lynch, also of S.Carolina, killed at a birthday party by a 5 yo boy when he reached into a car trunk to get a gun he thought was a toy – ruled an accident;
    –11 yo Jamara Stevens of Philadelphia killed by her 2 yo brother who was playing with a handgun – mother charged.

    guess what the 2 cases where an adult was charged have in common. that would be this Milwaukee case, and the case of Jamara Stevens in Philadelphia. or rather, guess what is different about the other 4 cases. because in EACH case, charges should have been filed against someone. yet only in those two. hmm…
