Get a call from the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department? It just might be a scam!

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- Waukesha County Sheriff's officials are warning of a phone scam occurring in the Waukesha County area.

Sheriff's officials say they're investigating several complaints in which individuals call -- identifying themselves as representatives of the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department.

The citizen is then told they will have a warrant issued for their arrest due to missed court appearances, unpaid fines or missed jury duty dates unless immediate payment is made to the Sheriff's Department.

The caller then requests payment via a pre-paid money card -- leaving a callback number to receive the card number and access codes.

Sheriff's officials say it is not common practice for the Waukesha Sheriff’s Department to contact citizens via telephone to advise them of warrants or to collect fines.  It is also not the practice of the Waukesha Sheriff’s Department to collect payment for fines via pre-paid money cards.

Anyone who receives this type of call is encouraged to ignore the request, hang up, and contact the Waukesha Sheriff’s Department.
