Man shot, wounded near 8th & Mitchell on Milwaukee's south side

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are investigating a shooting that happened near 8th and Mitchell Sts. on the city's south side Friday afternoon, September 5th.

Police say a 21-year-old Milwaukee man was shot shortly before 2 p.m. after an altercation on the street with a suspect who is known to him.  Apparently the two men got into an argument, one of them walked away only to return in a vehicle and fire several shots. The victim was conveyed to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Witnesses to the crime stayed on the scene to help police identify the suspect. Milwaukee police say they are confident they'll have him in custody before long. They also say the victim in this case has a history with the police department.

Crime tape roped off the scene as police swarmed the corner of 8th and Mitchell, Minerva Santiago didn't see the shooting, but heard it from her workplace across the street.

"We got kind of scared and we said okay those were gun shots and obviously you know we made sure that everybody was safe in the building, and we noticed that across the street was people running and saying that somebody was shot," Santiago said.

FOX6 News does not know the victim's name, but we're told he's a 21-year-old Milwaukee resident. Police say the victim and the shooter knew each other, so this was not a random act. They are also actively looking for the shooter.

"The suspect who we are moving forward to identify him was observed by several witnesses who remained on the scene to cooperate and assist the police in the investigation which is nice to see," Milwaukee Police Department Captain, Alfonso Morales said.

Police say the incident was also captured on video and they hope to apprehend the shooter soon.

Despite the fact that a shooting happened on the street in broad daylight, Santiago says she still feels safe here.

"The police...the response was really good, I see the people pretty much community came together and cooperated very well with everything and I still believe you know that this community has a lot to offer," Santiago said.

Police tell FOX6 News that the victim does have a history with the police department.
