Man changing tire on roadside struck, killed in Racine County

RACINE COUNTY (WITI) -- The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on westbound I-94 at mile marker 335.9 in Racine County near Braun Road.

According to officials, a Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper stopped to check on two vehicles on the shoulder of WB I-94 near Braun Road around 10:43 p.m. Sunday, September 7th.

Upon approaching the vehicles, an individual was discovered lying in the ditch nearby. The trooper checked the individual's vitals and began CPR after it was determined that the subject was not breathing and was without a pulse.

Additional troopers arrived on scene and assisted with CPR and traffic direction. The Racine County Sheriff's Office also assisted with traffic direction.

The troopers continued CPR until the Yorkville/Union Grove Fire Department arrived on scene and took over life-saving efforts.

The individual was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

At this time, it is suspected that the decedent had pulled over due to a flat tire and was struck by a passing motorist after exiting his own vehicle.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating and reconstructing this incident.

The two right lanes of I-94 westbound were shut down at the scene of the incident for approximately two hours during the investigation.

Police have identified the man who died as Joseph Lo Piccolo of Deerfield, Illinois.

The driver of the striking vehicle is a 25-year-old Milwaukee man.
