Expansion at School of Freshwater Sciences brings state of the art equipment

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- UW-Milwaukee celebrates the opening of its School of Freshwater Sciences expansion. Saturday, September 13th, Governor Scott Walker toured the facility on Milwaukee's inner harbor.

An open house featured demonstrations, entertainment, and tours of the $53 million building.

There are bio-secure and quarantine facilities, as well as the nation's first DNA sequencing lab dedicated to freshwater issues.

Students, faculty, and staff will have access to state of the art teaching and research equipment.

"This is without a question the premiere academic research institute in the Great Lakes and the School of Freshwater Sciences, believe it or not, is the only School of Freshwater Sciences in the country," said Associate Dean for research, Val Klump.

The school's center for water policy recently recommended improvements to the EPA's grant making process on great lakes restoration projects.
