"It's pretty much a blessing:" Habitat for Humanity home built to honor Pope Francis

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Dozens of volunteers spent Monday morning building five new homes in the rain for Habitat for Humanity.

But one of those hard workers is actually a recipient of one of the homes.

"It's pretty much a blessing and I'm here and I'm happy," said Erskine Jude.

Jude was thrilled to learn he will soon own the very home he is working on.

He plans to move in with his mother and his 2 nephews who he has cared for since the passing of his brother.

"My mom's been calling me saying you all still out building the houses even though it's raining out?' Yes, mom we're out here. So it's a dream come true," said Jude.

And that home has a special story, as it's one of 3 homes nation-wide sponsored by an anonymous donor inspired by Pope Francis' commitment to social justice.

"Today I think the excitement level is off the charts. Today we celebrate the start of the construction of a very special house that will be built in honor of Pope Francis," said Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Brian Sonderman.

Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki is touched by this story and visited the construction site to bless Jude's home.

He believes generosity is contagious as Jude is a member of the Army National Guard.

"He's giving back to us by contributing back to the community, to our country, to our society, and our nation," said Archbishop Listecki.

As Jude worked alongside the volunteers helping him, he thought of the happy days in store for his family in the future.

"I was happy knowing that I've got a new beginning," said Jude.
