Putting their "bye week" to good use! Homestead football players help to clean up a church

MEQUON (WITI) -- The Homestead High School varsity football team is on a bye week. They were supposed to play Nicolet High School this week, but Nicolet didn't have enough players to field a team.

The Highlanders thought a little volunteer work would be a good way to spend their down time.

On Tuesday, September 16th, a group of players helped to clean up "Vessels of Honour Church" in Mequon.

They spent the day washing windows and picking up around the church.

The coach says this is an important part of team bonding and it keeps them connected to their community.

"Football's important. We spend a lot of time, but there are more important things. Family's one of them. The families we belong to in our own households, the family of our community. Here we have an opportunity to help our community family out, and it's something that our kids jumped at the opportunity to do that and they're darn excited to be helping out," Homestead High School football coach Dave Keel said.

Other projects include helping with a cookout at a nursing home and cleaning up an elderly resident's yard.
