Mother hailed a hero: She died after shoving her daughter out of the way of an approaching SUV

ST. LOUIS (WITI) -- A mother and daughter were outside a Walgreens store on Monday evening, September 22nd when an SUV jumped the curb and headed straight for them. FOX6's sister station FOX2Now in St. Louis says the mother lost her life, but she's being hailed a hero for saving the life of her young daughter.

FOX2 KTVI says the mother shoved her daughter out of the way of the approaching SUV.

Police say a woman in her 30s drove the SUV up onto the sidewalk -- though at this time, it's unclear why. Eyewitnesses tell KTVI the driver may have pushed the gas pedal when she intended to push the brake pedal.

KTVI says the mother who died and her 10-year-old daughter were on their way out of the store when the SUV approached them.

The mother in her mid-30s was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV's driver was treated by paramedics at the scene.
