Man seriously hurt after being struck by vehicle on Milwaukee's east side

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are investigating a serious motor vehicle crash that happened near the intersection of N. Maryland Avenue and E. Edgewood Avenue shortly before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 23rd.

According to police, a pedestrian heading northbound was struck by an eastbound vehicle. The pedestrian is a 66-year-old Shorewood man who suffered serious injuries. He was flown by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital.

The driver of the vehicle is a 24-year-old woman from Waukesha who remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

FOX6 News spoke with UW-Milwaukee student Jamie Rauch. She walks by the intersection where this accident happened almost every day to get to class.

"It makes me nervous. Makes me definitely want to watch where I'm walking," said Rauch. There's so many cars and students and distracted people. Even the walkers are distracted with their phones. I almost had a bang up with someone texting and walking."

"Our population tends to use their cell phones quite often and we ask that you have your head up, no texting at the point that you are crossing the walkway for your safety and the safety of the driver," said UW-Milwaukee Police Officer Donald Brown.
