One-stop shopping for seniors: Milwaukee's McGovern Park hosts wellness fair

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The McGovern Park Senior Center was transformed Wednesday into a "one stop shop" for seniors to learn about and improve their health and well-being.

It’s part of the 2014 "Embrace Your Wellness" resource fairs happening in the Milwaukee area through October.

There were 28 vendors in all -- everything from like the department on aging and the AARP, to Walgreens which was handing out flu shots, and UWM nursing students who were checking people's blood pressure.

“By having the resource fair not only are we looking at things that maybe you`d see in a health fair, like insurance and access to medical care, but all those other things that make you happy and healthy,” said Kate Craney-Welch, the Program Coordinator at McGovern Park Senior Center.

The event celebrates an initiative of the department of aging which focuses on 8 degrees of wellness--physical, intellectual, social, emotional, spiritual, vocational, financial, and environmental.

“One of the things that we like to make sure is not only that we are reaction for adults 50 and over but that we give them information that helps them and their families,” said Craney-Welch.

This was the first of at least five resource fairs happening through Interfaith, which is a program for older adults.
