Need help paying your energy bill? "Energy Assistance Program" season begins October 1st

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The start of the 2014-2015 "Energy Assistance Program" season is just days away and Milwaukee County officials are urging residents to stay current on their energy bills.

“We want people who may need help to know that help is available, but we really want to encourage them to take that first step and come apply before their lights or heat get shut off,” said Diane Gallegos, Energy Assistance Program Coordinator for Milwaukee County. “Wisconsin winters can be harsh, and we don’t want families to be without power because they fell behind on their bill,” Gallegos said.

The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) is a one-time payment that covers a portion of the energy cost of a residence. The amount of the payment varies depending on several factors, including the household size, income and energy costs.

The average payment is $338. WHEAP is available to all residents who meet income requirements; it is not restricted to residents receiving state or federal benefits.

Applications can be submitted from October 1st through May 15th at Community Advocates or one of three Social Development Commission (SDC) sites. Both agencies accept walk-ins and appointments. Appointments can be made online or by calling 211.
