Coming together to take back the neighborhood after 50-year-old Milwaukee woman gunned down

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A 50-year-old Milwaukee woman was gunned down in what police say was a robbery attempt that led to a shooting last Thursday, October 2nd. On Monday, October 6th, those who live near 60th and Roosevelt came together in an effort to take back their neighborhood.

Police say 50-year-old Carla Nichols was shot and killed after she was confronted during a robbery attempt after she had exited her vehicle.

Police do not have anyone in custody.

On Monday, October 6th, neighbors and police officers walked the streets in the neighborhood.

One of the organizers of the event said it is demonstrations like this that pull residents together to tell criminals their community is strong, and they're not afraid to live where they live.

"We live in a great neighborhood here where the communities are strong, and it showed today with everyone here," Capitol Drive Lutheran Church Pastor Alexis Twito said.

Pastor Twito says events like this are part of a larger initiative to bring together residents, family members and friends who are victims of violence.
