Attorney General candidates wrap up second debate

MADISON (AP) — Wisconsin attorney general candidates Brad Schimel and Susan Happ have wrapped up their second debate.

The race between Schimel, a Republican, and Happ, a Democrat, has turned fierce, with each accusing the other of being soft on crime. Friday's debate generated some sparks, too, when Happ accused Schimel of flip-flopping on whether he would defend a state law that bans outside groups from coordinating with candidates.

The law is at the heart of an investigation state election officials have launched into whether Republican Gov. Scott Walker's campaign illegally coordinated with conservative groups.

Schimel has said he would defend the law. When a debate moderator asked him again about the law he said couldn't defend state regulations that go beyond constitutional boundaries. Happ said that means he wouldn't defend the law.
