(CNN) — The parents of a 12-year-old Texas boy are calling for an investigation after the boy was hit and killed by a teenager learning to drive.

Teddy bears, candles and letters of love sit where Eric Lozano lost his life on Friday evening, October 24th.

Lozano’s uncle remembers the boy as a happy kid who loved to play with his friends.

“Loved to play sports, ride skateboard, go fishing, loved his mom, his brother. You know, just a normal 12-year-old boy,” Brandon Brown said.

Police say their preliminary investigation has revealed an unlicensed 16-year-old girl was learning basic driving skills from her father when she lost control of the vehicle.

Police say the girl put the car in reverse and accelerated rapidly out of a driveway — crossing the road and hitting the 12-year-old boy, pinning him against a nearby home.

“I didn’t believe it would end like this. I mean, it’s hard for us, his friends — especially the ones who saw everything,” Lozano’s friend Luis Alvarez said.

Lozano’s aunt beleives there should be legal action against the 16-year-old driver — for justice for her nephew, and to protect other children in the community.

“There’s been nothing, and something has to be done, legally. The child should have not been behind the wheel getting taught how to drive in a neighborhood where there’s kids everywhere running around and playing,” Erica Mendez said.

Lozano’s family has established a Go Fund Me page to help with funeral costs. So far, more than $12,000 has been raised.
