"It's very troubling:" Four-year-old girl in critical condition after she was shot in the head Racine

RACINE (WITI) -- Racine police say a child was taken to a Racine hospital in critical condition, and then flown by Flight for Life to Children's Hospital after that child was shot in the head in Racine on Wednesday evening, November 5th.

It happened shortly before 6:00 p.m. near 18th and Villa St.

Police say officers arrived at the scene to find a four-year-old girl suffering from a gunshot wound.

"We saw the guy holding the little girl and he was holding her, crying. He was just screaming," Anthony Roman, who lives nearby said.

An initial investigation has revealed the child was struck while sitting in a vehicle after multiple shots were fired. Police say family members were in the vehicle with the child, but it doesn't appear anyone else was injured.

Police are calling this an active and ongoing investigation. They say the suspect(s) in this case are still at large. Police aren't sure at this point whether the girl's family was targeted.

"Of course these are some of the most difficult calls for our officers to respond to. You could hear it over the air in their voices when they responded and it`s very troubling for us," Racine Police Sgt. Jessie Metoyer said.

Neighbors tell FOX6 News they heard four to six shots fired.
