A 5-year-old is snatched from her bed, stepdad wakes up in time to catch kidnapper

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A suburban Salt Lake City man foiled an attempt to kidnap his young daughter from her bed early Friday after confronting a man carrying her across the lawn.

The 5-year-old girl wasn't hurt.

Police Sgt. Dean Carriger said the suspect entered the home through an unlocked door about 4:30 a.m. in Sandy, south of Salt Lake City.

The girl's stepfather was awakened by the noise, ran outside, confronted the man and wrestled away his daughter.

The man ran, but was captured with the help of a police dog.

The family told police they don't know the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Troy Morley of Roy, Utah.

The case evokes echoes the kidnapping of 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart from her Salt Lake City bedroom in 2002. She was held captive for nine months before being found.
