Firefighters battle five-alarm fire at home in Town of Palmyra

PALMYRA (WITI) -- Crews from 20 different fire departments responded to a five-alarm fire in the Town of Palmyra late Friday, November 14th.

The home was located on Pine Drive near the intersection of Highways H and Z in Jefferson County. Officials say the homeowner discovered a fire in his basement near his wood-burning stove -- and called 911. The homeowner was able to get himself and three of his pets out of the house safely.

The Town of Palmyra Fire Chief says this fire posed many challenges.

"Anytime you have a structure fire in a rural area, you have to have a water supply you run into challenges. Getting water, getting to the structure because of how it was built," said Chief Marshall Lewis.

The home was a total loss. Investigators are trying to determine exactly how the fire began,
