Filling their carts for a good cause! Two face off at El Rey Foodmart in "Race for the Hungry"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Shoppers dashed up and down the aisles of the El Rey Foodmart on Friday, December 26th -- filling their carts for a good cause.

"I`m used to shopping for one person, so shopping for hundreds is a little bit more difficult," "Race for the Hungry" winner Rachael VanLiere said.

"The toughest part of this was trying to keep everything in the cart and trying to keep my readers on so I could actually read the list and run at the same time," "Race for the Hungry" competitor Stephanie Bennett said.

The racers were participating in North Shore Bank's 6th Annual "Race for the Hungry" -- rushing to collect all of the items on the Milwaukee Christian Center's wish list.

"It`s fun! We`re helping families, and we`re helping an organization that`s helping our community," North Shore Bank Branch Manager Claudia Romo said.

This time of year, many families need extra help, as the holidays can take a toll on their finances.

"The real winner is our food pantry for Milwaukee Christian Center and we`re grateful that we have this opportunity through El Rey and North Shore Bank to be able to do this," Bennett said.

The Milwaukee Christian Center got to keep all of the collected food.

The winning shopper in the "Race for the Hungry" challenge received a $100 grocery gift card and the runner-up got a $50 gift card, but neither of the competitors kept their prize.

"The value of the food is over $500 for the food pantry and they`re donating the gift certificates for El Rey back to the food pantry so we can buy additional food -- so it`s great," Milwaukee Christian Center Executive Director Karen Higgins said.

It took the winner eight minutes to finish the race.
