Red Cross assisting family after fire breaks out at home in West Allis

WEST ALLIS (WITI) -- West Allis Fire officials responded to a fire at a home near S. 69th Street and Burnham on Thursday afternoon, January 1st.

It happened between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

We're told one of the homeowner's children noticed a fire burning in the home's basement. The homeowner and the rest of the people inside the home were able to evacuate as the fire began to spread from the basement into the walls and onto the first and second floors of the home.

Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the home. They were able to put out the fire in less than 10 minutes.

No one was injured.

Fire officials say the home had working smoke detectors.

The Red Cross is working to assist the family.

There is no word on what caused the fire.
