DPW calling for overnight snow removal operation: Move your vehicle by 2:00 a.m. Monday!
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The city of Milwaukee's Department of Public Works (DPW) has called for an overnight snow removal operation in the 5-Day Parking Exception Area.
All residents in this area must move their vehicles to the correct side of the street by 2:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015 (even numbered side of the street).
This will help ensure that DPW crews can access as much of the street pavement as possible to remove ice and snow effectively, efficiently, and most importantly, safely.
Once the area streets have been plowed, DPW will notify residents again that the operation has concluded and overnight parking is once again permitted on both sides of the street, until the next operation is called.
“So far this winter, the new parking rules experiment has worked well. But the true test comes now when DPW needs to clear snow and ice from our streets in a timely and effective manner," Alderman Nik Kovac, who sponsored the 5-Day Parking Exception Area legislation said.
"It's kinda confusing. The signs are small. You can't always see them -- especially if there is snow on them. You can't really read them either," Taylor Flanagan said. It's her first winter in Milwaukee.
Flanagan's neighborhood, Murray Hill, is part of the "5-Day Exception Area." It stretches east of the river and south of Locust. Residents who live in this area can park on both sides of the street for most of the year. But winter parking restrictions taking effect December 1st through March 1st change that.
"There`s no way to get around that it`s a bit confusing. But just remember, when there`s snow on the ground, move (your vehicle) around," Kovac said.
With plows on the ground Sunday night and into Monday morning, comes a need for residents who live on the city's East Side to move their vehicles to one side of the street -- regardless of the 5-Day Exception rule.
"Make sure your car is parked on the even side of the street everywhere -- even if you`re in the 5-Day Exception Area. On any given block, it can be even more confusing if there are other winter-related signs. Long story short, the sign trumps what I'm talking about now," Kovac said.
City residents are reminded to read the street signs on their block and in their neighborhoods for winter parking instructions. The posted street sign takes take precedence in all areas of the city.
As not all winter parking rules are posted, residents should also check for parking restrictions on the DPW website by CLICKING HERE.

Failure to move a vehicle overnight during a declared DPW operation will result in a $20 citation and the possibility of being towed. Towed vehicles are subject to a $105 reclamation fee plus a $20 per day storage fee. Remember – you also need a valid overnight parking permit to park on the street.
Residents are encouraged to sign up to receive a Snow Mobile Winter Text Alert message and/or an E-Notify email message which serve to alert them that a DPW operation has been called, and that all vehicles must be moved accordingly.
