Basement fire in Bayside leads to $25,000 in damage

BAYSIDE (WITI) -- North Shore Fire/Rescue officials say a basement fire in Bayside Sunday, January 11th led to $25,000 in damage.

The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m. at a home in the 8900 block of N. Seneca Road in Bayside.

A homeowner called 911, reporting a fire in her basement -- and reporting heavy smoke coming up the stairs.

NorthShore Fire/Rescue and Bayside law enforcement units were dispatched immediately.

First arriving Bayside Police Department units advised the dispatch center that there was heavy smoke coming from multiple sides of the home. Responding fire units were notified of this information and the on duty shift commander requested the call be upgraded to bring additional resources to the scene.

On the arrival of the first fire companies, it was confirmed that the residents and one dog had been evacuated and an aggressive interior attack was initiated on a fire in the basement of the home.

The resident reported one cat remained somewhere in the home.

The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished. It was contained to an area of the basement, believed to be the area of origin.

At this time, the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

No one was injured.

The cat was located hiding in a second floor bedroom closet after fire extinguishment and ventilation of the home were completed.

The fire damage to the home was confined to the basement; however, there is extensive smoke damage throughout the basement and first floor of the home. The damage to the structure and contents is estimated to be approximately $25,000.

The home was equipped with working smoke detectors, which were sounding on the arrival of the fire units.
