"I robbed a bank:" Police say 48-year-old Sheboygan man robbed bank while dressed as a woman

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY (WITI) -- A 48-year-old Sheboygan man has been charged -- accused of robbing of the Wells Fargo Bank on Wisconsin Avenue in Sheboygan last week, and officials say he was dressed as a woman when the crime was committed.

Darin Beverly faces one count of robbery of a financial institution (repeater) for the robbery that occurred on Friday, January 9th.

Police were dispatched to the Wells Fargo Bank around 2:30 p.m.

There, they spoke with a bank teller who reported she was working at her teller station when a male party entered the bank and pushed a note to her stating "all the money, no die pack." The criminal complaint indicates the note appeared to be written on a page torn from a calendar. As the teller was pulling out money, she told police the only comment the suspect made to her was "more."

The complaint says the suspect grabbed a handful of money and fled the scene.

Police were able to take a look at surveillance images showing the suspect.

He was described by bank employees as wearing a fur coat, with a yellowish scarf, a black head wrap with white polka dots, pink and purple slippers and makeup.

As officers were responding to the bank, a detective heard an officer advise that he had come into contact with a citizen who observed a man running down Wisconsin Avenue wearing a fur coat.

The complaint indicates the detective observed a neck scarf in the area, along with a floppy, white woman's sun hat.

The detective made contact with a citizen who informed that a strange man had been hanging out at the apartments in the 300 block of Wisconsin Avenue, and the woman described the man in a manner consistent with that of the reported robbery suspect, according to the complaint.

Officers responded to the apartments, but didn't receive any response.

Police obtained a search warrant for the apartments, and inside one residence, they found no one home, but they did note clothing worn during the robbery inside -- including a fur coat, various amounts of makeup and purple slippers.

During the search, police were made aware of suspicious noises coming from the basement.

Two officers entered the basement and found Darin Beverly. He was taken into custody without incident. U.S. currency was located in both of his front pants pockets -- a total of $370. Officers verfied that same amount was taken from the Wells Fargo Bank, according to the complaint.

Police interviewed Beverly, and he told them "I robbed a bank," according to the complaint.

The complaint says Beverly told police he was drinking and had consumed some crack cocaine prior to the robbery.
