Police: Five-year-old boy pulled from two-alarm house fire near 77th and Villard

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police say a five-year-old child was pulled from a two-alarm house fire occurring on N. 77th Street and Villard Wednesday evening, January 14th.

The fire was first reported shortly after 6:30 p.m.

The first to respond found heavy fire blowing through three windows on the duplex's first floor.

"It was bad. It was a lot of smoke and a lot of fire," neighbor Jakeal Williams said.

With a child trapped in the home, neighbors say they kicked in the door and one man even ran into the burning building -- looking for the boy.

"He went into the basement to see where the little boy was 'cause they heard him screaming but after a few minutes they couldn`t see the boy so they came back out -- so they couldn`t find the little boy 'cause it was too much smoke," Williams said.

Firefighters were immediately notified of the child trapped inside the home, and a rescue team was sent in as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

"We did in fact find him within minutes on the first floor. We pulled that child out. He was not breathing. He had suffered some burns. He was resuscitated on scene and transported out to Children`s Hospital," MFD Assistant Chief Dan Lipski said.

The child's condition isn't known, but it is believed he will survive.

The Red Cross says it is assisting four children and two adults.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
