Wrong-way driver killed in crash involving six vehicles on I-94 at Hawley Road
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- One person is dead after a crash involving six vehicles that occurred on I-94 at Hawley Road Friday evening, January 23rd. The crash shut down part of the interstate for hours.
DOT video shows a wrong-way driver in a 1993 BMW getting onto I-94 from the General Mitchell Boulevard off-ramp -- heading westbound in the eastbound lanes. Police say the wrong-way driver was 32-year-old Marcos Cortez of Wauwatosa.
Cortez was pronounced dead at the scene. Three passengers in his vehicle were not seriously injured.
Four other vehicles were involved in secondary crashes. Two people were taken to the hospital after suffering minor injuries.
Backups from the crash extended back until about 84th Street -- approximately a mile-and-a-half from the accident scene.
Due to the severity of the crash and the need to investigate, the eastbound freeway was closed and traffic was diverted off at S. 70th Street until around 1:00 a.m. Saturday.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office could release an autopsy report as soon as Monday, January 26th -- which could show whether alcohol was a factor in this crash.
