MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Explore what the world has to offer right here in Milwaukee as you can get free access to the Milwaukee Public Museum and many other gems in the city this weekend -- all thanks to the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.

Saturday, January 24th, thousands of people from near and far strolled throughout the Milwaukee Public Museum.

Little Artaegia Staten was overwhelmed with joy.

"I like the skeletons, the butterflies, everything," said Staten.

Families are getting the opportunity to tour the museum for free -- thanks to FOX6 News and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.

"We are celebrating a hundred years of generosity from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and this community," said Ellen Gilligan, President and CEO of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.

Gilligan says the organization is having a year-long celebration and giving the community unique experiences that showcase the people, places and opportunities that make greater Milwaukee special.

"The foundation invests in all kinds of things, arts and culture, community and economic development, and education and the environment health, and human services over the course of the year you will see everything the foundation invests in," said Gilligan.

It's first gift is free all access to the Milwaukee Public Museum.

"We cover natural history so the natural world dinosaurs, the history of our state, or country of our world -- learn about the planetarium and outer space and the universe," said Gilligan.

"It's awesome because it's so hard to find stuff for families that's affordable and it's a great experience so we are very thankful," said Melissa Engelhardt, enjoying museum.

Being allowed to view 4 1/2 million artifacts, the free event is proving to be a priceless experience for some.

"I think it's good for the kids, you can learn a lot," said Cynthia Hollis, enjoying museum.

You can also get free access to the museum on Sunday as well, January 25th.

In the coming months there will be 11 more gifts the Greater Milwaukee Foundation is presenting to the community.

The next gift announcement from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation will be February 9th.

Absolutely wonderful experience here with my kids today! So many families came that they used the freight elevator to help carry wheelchairs and strollers from floor to floor! With five kids, this museum is normally too costly for us to visit. This really wad a wonderful gift to our family. Thank you!
