Leading the pack: Two most recent presidential polls show Governor Walker the Republican leader

MADISON (WITI) -- The two most recent polls in the first two presidential nominating contests show a surprise leader on the Republican side. Governor Scott Walker is out in front of big national names like Jeb Bush and Rand Paul. But Democrats say they worry Walker is focusing too much on presidential politics and not enough on state policy.

Governor Walker introduced his two-year budget on Tuesday evening, February 3rd at the Capitol in Madison, and he also gave a bit of an introduction of himself to the rest of the country. This, as voters in Iowa and New Hampshire already seem to like what they see.

Those states host the first two presidential nominating contests. A Des Moines Register poll showed Walker in first place, leading Kentucky Senator Rand Paul by one point.

This week, a New Hampshire poll showed Walker in the top spot, leading former Florida Governor Jeb Bush 21-14.

Is he peaking too early?

"It's ironic to think about peaking in anything when I'm not even a candidate for anything yet, so we watch that. We know it's a long ways off. Should I choose to get in the race, we're going to do what I did in Wisconsin, which is to hone in on grassroots efforts to be in for the long haul, not just a week or two worth of buzz on anything. People see me here. I'm not a flash in the pan," Governor Walker said.

"I think Governor Walker's been so focused on being a presidential candidate and focused on the people of Iowa and New Hampshire than he has been on what's going on in his own state," Jason Rae, a member of the Democratic National Committee said.

Walker's critics say instead of raising money for a potential presidential campaign, Walker should focus on fixing the state's projected $2 billion deficit.

I think we see Governor Walker leading because he's spent all of his time in Iowa and new Hampshire talking to those primary states and isn't focused on governing," Rae said.

Governor Walker's next scheduled trip to Iowa will be next month. He'll appear at the state's first ever Agricultural Summit alonmg with at least seven other 2016 presidential contenders.
