LATEST: Wrong-way driver on I-94 was more than three times over alcohol limit

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office released on Friday, February 6th its investigation report in the wake of a fatal wrong-way crash that happened on I-94 near Hawley Rd. on January 23rd.

The crash shut down a stretch of I-94 for hours. DOT video showed the wrong-way driver in a car enter I-94 from the General Mitchell Boulevard off-ramp. He was heading westbound in the eastbound lanes and slammed into another car head-on. Police say the wrong-way driver was 32-year-old Marcos Cortez of Wauwatosa. He was ejected from his vehicle and died on the scene.  Three people in the vehicle Cortez struck were not seriously injured.

The medical examiner's report indicates Cortez's blood alcohol level was .282 -- or more than three times the legal limit for driving. It also indicates that speed was not a factor in this crash.

Four other vehicles were involved in secondary crashes. Two people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
