Sheboygan alderman behind bars, accused of sexually assaulting a child

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- It's an arrest that has city leaders in disbelief. A Sheboygan alderman is behind bars -- accused of sexually assaulting a child, and records show, it's not his first run-in with the law.

33-year-old Kevin Matichek's past transgressions were brought to light three years ago when he questioned former Mayor Bob Ryan's leadership -- leading the recall effort against him.

On Saturday, February 7th, the current mayor and Common Council president learned of new allegations against Matichek they say are surprising.

Matichek currently serves as an alderperson for the city of Sheboygan, a position he's held for the past four years. In 2012, he led the recall effort against former Mayor Bob Ryan. Records then showed Matichek had legal troubles of his own -- from repeated traffic violations and a 'no contest' plea -- to a misdemeanor possession of an illegally obtained prescription in 2007.

"There was one pill in the back of my car that I'd given a ride to someone I shouldn't have," said Matichek.

During an interview three years ago, Matichek told FOX6 News he wanted to be transparent.

"I'm being open and up front of my own life," said Matichek.

His colleagues describe him as a professional, and a hard worker.

"It's just something you don't think anybody is capable of, but somebody, an alderman should be held to higher standards," said Sheboygan Mayor, Mike Vandersteen.

As city leaders try to understand the accusations, they are now focused on moving forward.

"We're just going to continue to carry on. At this point, it's an allegation. We're going to have to let the process play itself out," said Mayor Vandersteen.

The case has been referred to the Sheboygan County District Attorney's Office for review. Matichek is being held at the Sheboygan County Detention Center.

A news conference is planned for Monday, February 8th.
