"It's hard to deal with:" Baby Kairii Dailey, Paul Kucharczyk remembered after deadly stabbing incident

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Loved ones gathered Sunday, February 8th to remember 39-year-old Paul Kucharczyk and five-month-old Kairii Dailey, killed in a stabbing incident that occurred near 39th and Clybourn on Friday, January 23rd. Kairii Dailey's mother, 19-year-old Alexia and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Christopher Hamilton were injured in the stabbing. Alexia Dailey's ex-boyfriend, 20-year-old Ruben Garcia faces charges in this case.

Kairii Dailey

The vigil for Paul Kucharczyk and Kairii Dailey was held in Grant Park in South Milwaukee. A Native American spiritual leader burned herbs and led prayers as Alexia Dailey talked about her unimaginable loss.

"It`s hard to deal with the fact that I don`t have a little girl to take care of every day," Alexia Dailey said.

Dailey and her boyfriend Christopher Hamilton have scars from the attack that nearly ended their lives.

"Having trouble sleeping at night. It`s an understatement, but I`m healing physically -- but mentally it`s gonna take us both awhile," Hamilton said.

Police say Ruben Garcia attacked Alexia Dailey after she refused his request that they get back together. Police say he even fatally stabbed his own daughter, five-month-old Kairii as she laid in her crib.

Hamilton and Kucharczyk jumped in to stop Garcia, and Kucharczyk was killed.

Kucharczyk's family members say they take pride in his final actions.

"I am so pleased that he was there taking care of them. He loved his friends. He loved his family, so that`s what we`re hanging onto," Sue Glembin said.

Dailey and Hamilton are recovering from fractures and severed tendons, but recovering from the loss of Dailey's daughter and Godfather will take much longer.

"I make sure she stays happy and smiling and she tries to do the same for me," Hamilton said.

"I know both my daughter and my Godfather are watching over us," Dailey said.

Garcia has pleaded not guilty to the charges filed against him, and he will stand trial. He faces two counts of intentional homicide and two counts of attempted homicide. He's due back in court on February 27th.
