Mount Pleasant police: Two-year-old seriously injured in hit-and-run incident; driver in custody

MOUNT PLEASANT (WITI) -- Mount Pleasant police say a 46-year-old woman was arrested after a hit-and-run incident in which a child was seriously injured.

It happened on Sunday afternoon, February 8th shortly before 3:00 p.m.

Police were dispatched to the intersection of Wood Road and Durand Avenue where they learned that one of two vehicles involved in a crash had fled the scene. Witnesses were able to obtain a license plate number, and the vehicle was located a couple of miles away.

An investigation revealed that a Nissan Maxima was attempting a left hand turn onto Wood Road from eastbound Durand Avenue when it was struck by an eastbound Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Three of the four occupants of the Nissan Maxima reported minor injuries, while a two-year-old backseat passenger sustained serious injuries. That two-year-old child was transported to Children's Hospital in critical condition. Flight for Life was unable to fly due to weather conditions.

Mount Pleasant police and the Wisconsin State Patrol are investigating.

At this time, police say alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in this incident.

The pickup truck's operator was arrested on a charge of hit-and-run causing injury.
