BEWARE: Warming up your car in freezing temperatures could cost you

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- When the temperatures drop, it is tempting to start your car and walk away while it's heating up -- but it could cost you.

There is never a dull moment for one Cudahy mom. Taber Lottouzee has her hands full with two young boys to look after.

"I'm a single mom. I work two 24 hour shifts a week," said Lottouzee.

Now, her hectic life has become more complicated.

"I need my car. That's how I support my kids. That's how I take care of them," said Lottouzee.

Lottouzee's only car, and only mode of transportation was stolen this week.

"It's kind of scary," said Lottouzee.

Before leaving work, at 34th and Capitol, around 7 a.m., she decided to do something many people have done at least once.

"So, I thought I'll leave it running for a little bit so everything warms up," said Lottouzee.

But 15 minutes later...

"I walked out the door and it was gone," said Lottouzee.

It was stolen, along with personal belongings right from the parking lot.

"I felt like I was dreaming. It was just gone, just like that," said Lottouzee.

Lottouzee is not the only one.

Milwaukee police say it is a problem every winter. They are warning people to be smart. Do not leave your keys in the ignition.

"Learn from my mistake. It's not worth it," said Lottouzee.

Lottouzee is now looking for a better outcome.

"I'm hoping that my car will be found sooner rather than later," said Lottouzee.

So that her busy life can get back to normal.

"I need to get to work. I need to make money so I can have enough to be able to support my kids," said Lottouzee.

Something that could save your car is a remote starter. If you do not have one, the smart thing would be to suffer in the cold -- it will warm up eventually.
