High school teen faces charges of manslaughter after encouraging friend to kill himself
BRISTOL COUNTY, MA (WITI) -- A Massachusetts teen is facing charges of first-degree involuntary manslaughter after police say she encouraged a fellow student to commit suicide in July 2014.
According to WJW, 18-year-old Conrad Roy committed suicide on July 13, 2014, by inducing carbon monoxide poisoning while sitting in his truck. 18-year-old Michelle Carter is accused of "strongly influencing" Roy's decision to kill himself. After a lengthy investigation, she was indicted on February 5th.
Carter was allegedly aware of Roy's suicidal thoughts, but did not try to help him or notify his family or school officials -- she encouraged him to take his own life.
Shortly before Roy died, he became scared and said he did not want to leave his family. Investigators say he then got out of his truck.
Court documents reveal that Carter told Roy to "get back in."
After Roy's death, Carter posted several times on social media mourning him.
According to South Coast Today, a Fairhaven detective spoke about Carter.
"She was planning to continue to encourage Conrad to take his own life, so as a result she was beginning to put together a plan to get sympathy from her friends," said Fairhaven Detective, Scott R. Gordon.
Police say Carter was allegedly telling her friends days earlier before Roy's suicide "it's her fault that Conrad is dead, even though he was still alive and speaking and texting with her regularly."
In July, 2014, South Coast Today reported Carter texted a friend saying she couldn't find Roy and was "a mess," then an hour later she texted Roy and allegedly said, "Let me know when you're gonna do it."
Carter is now out on $2,500 bail. Her next court date is scheduled for April.
