School bus driver loses control, slams into home, injuring sleeping man inside
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A school bus slammed into a home near 52nd and Mill on Wednesday morning, March 4th. The bus contained only its driver, but a man was sleeping when the bus came barreling into his bedroom.
It appears the bus driver struck a utility pole and an SUV before slamming into the home.
"He had to be going pretty fast," the homeowner, Todd Robinette said.
Robinette rents out the home the bus slammed into. He got a call around 8:00 a.m. Wednesday. He then headed over to the property to check out the damage.
Robinette says the bus came in like a battering ram.
"The tires are like, down in the basement. Pushed the basement wall out on the opposite side and this is actually a bedroom where some people were sleeping," Robinette said.
Andrew Bogan says his father was in the bedroom when it happened.
"Come knock you out of your bed -- knock you almost five feet into the air! Knocked him to the other damn side of the room!" Bogan said.
Bogan says his father was taken to the hospital. He is expected to be okay.
The home, on the other hand, is a wreck.
"The electrical service -- that's shut off now. The gas service is on the other side, where it popped out, so they shut that off. They turned the water off," Robinette said.
Pieces of debris were scattered around the scene. We're told before slamming into the home, the bus struck a light pole and an SUV.
"Everything is gone as you can see. The whole frame is gone. You can't even drive this truck," Tameca Hill said.
The bus driver's condition, as well as what caused the driver to crash into the home remain unclear -- but Robinette says what happened Wednesday morning is something he'll never forget.
"I've never seen a bus go drive through a house," Robinette said.
Police say the male occupant of the home and the male bus driver were taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. A preliminary investigation has indicated speed may have been a factor in this incident.
