Police: 56-year-old Kiel man arrested during Trooper Trevor Casper's burial service

KIEL (WITI) -- Kiel police say an arrest was made during the burial service for Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper Trevor Casper Monday, March 30th.

Police say around 10:15 a.m., during the private burial service, officers providing security at the burial service noticed a 56-year-old man from Kiel walk past the cemetery borders carrying a bag with an unknown object protruding from the bag.

Officers approached the man and questioned him. They then attempted to escort him from the cemetery to avoid disrupting Trooper Casper's burial service, and that's when police say the man became verbally abusive and resisted officers. Officers had to use physical force to take him into custody and remove him from the scene.

Kiel EMS transported the man to a hospital in Manitowoc. He was quickly cleared by the medical staff at the hospital. Then, deputies with the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office transported him to the Manitowoc County Jail where he is being held on these charges:

Police say there were no issues as Trooper Casper's body was transported to the cemetery during a procession prior to his burial service.

Police estimate that between 5,500 and 6,000 citizens and law enforcement officials filled Kiel Sunday for Trooper Casper's funeral, held at Kiel High School.

21-year-old Casper was killed last Tuesday, March 24th in a shootout with a bank robbery suspect (Steven Timothy Snyder of Michigan) in Fond du Lac. It was Trooper Casper's first solo day on the job.

Kiel police said this about the arrest in a statement to FOX6 News:

"At this time, the City of Kiel Police Department will not be making any further statements about this arrest except to say that we are deeply saddened that this event occurred during such a time of tragedy for our community. At the Kiel Police Department we have chosen to keep our focus on the family of Trooper Casper and his extended family in the Wisconsin State Patrol. We deeply appreciate the sincere outpouring of sympathy for our community and particularly for the family of Trooper Trevor Casper, who gave his life to keep us all safe. We urge the public to continue to keep its focus on our native son Trooper Trevor Casper and not on the man who we prevented from further disrupting his private burial service."
