Opening Day: Finishing touches are put on the pristine field at Miller Park

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It's the final days before the Milwaukee Brewers officially kick off a new season.

"It's on the calendar for a long time, Opening Day, but it always seems to somehow sneak up on us a little bit," said Milwaukee Brewers Director of Grounds Michael Boettcher.

Grounds crew members have put in countless hours and now they're just putting the finishing touches on the field.

"Getting our moisture where we want it to be, tightening the lines. Yesterday, we did some edging, finished the edging today, getting our conditioner where we want, putting our pattern on one more time and giving her a touch up," said Boettcher.

The grass is constantly monitored and kept at one inch in length, which means they're out mowing every other day.

This year's mild spring has helped turn the grass into a luscious green.

"Last year, we were only open for about 60 hours with the roof before the season started. This year, we've been open a couple of weeks already. So it's been great, Mother Nature really gave us a reprieve this year from the winter we had," said Boettcher.

Crews can't help but crack a smile seeing all their hard work pay off.

"This is the time we enjoy. We're actually kind of seeing the fruits of our labor here for the last six months since our season ended last year. So we're pretty excited," said Boettcher.

Opening Day is Monday, April 6th.

The Milwaukee Brewers will be taking on the Colorado Rockies.
