“It hurt me that someone had to do that:” Restaurant owner leaves touching note for dumpster diver

WARR ACRES, Oklahoma (WITI) — A restaurant owner in Oklahoma recently noticed a dumpster diver had been rummaging through the trash looking for food. Rather than ignore it, she decided to help out.

“Last week, I had noticed some bags, when I had taken out the trash, were torn open and some of the food was taken out," Ashley Jiron, owner of P.B. Jams, said. "That really, it hurt me that someone had to do that."

Jiron put a sign on the dumpster and at the front door, telling whomever was eating from her trash that they’re “a human being, and worth more than a meal from a dumpster.”

The sign goes on to say the person is welcome to come in to the sandwich shop for a meal, free of charge.

“I will not take down that sign until they come in," Jiron said.

She says she knows pride may keep that person away -- but she's hoping they will take her up on this offer. She says a free meal is the least she can do for someone who is obviously down on their luck.

“I think we’ve all been in that position where we needed someone’s help and we just needed someone to extend that hand and if I can be that one person to extend that hand to another human being then I will definitely do it,” Jiron said.
