"It was a frustration:" South 27th Street reconstruction project finally on the road to completion

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- There is finally some relief in sight for drivers on Milwaukee's south side. Road work that was supposed to end last year was held up due to a cement shortage, and for construction crews, it'll definitely be nice to finally mark the South 27th Street reconstruction project off the list!

It's the beginning of the end on South 27th Street. It's a reconstruction project that should be referred to in the past tense. But as clear as the sky is blue, there is work that still isn't done.

"The contractor completion date was originally scheduled for November of 2014," said Senior Construction Supervisor Roger Reed.

But then came a shortage of cement. Officials had no choice but to stop construction.

"People were not all that pleased with coming into a second year of construction," said Alderman Terry Witkowski.

South 27th Street cuts through Witkowski's district. The alderman says eight weeks is the new number. There are eight weeks to finish parking lanes, sidewalks and other details.

"The project itself might have only been a mile-and-a-half long, but it affects the rest of the four miles that goes all the way to College Avenue," said Witkowski.

For the 27th Street project, it's been a long road to completion.

"It was a frustration for both motorists, people that live in the area as well as businesses here," said Witkowski.
