ShotSpotter alerts officers to shots fired, 44-year-old man arrested on several charges

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee man was arrested on several charges after police say he admitted to shooting several gunshots into the air on the city's north side.

Officers from MPD's District 5 were on patrol around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, April 19th when ShotSpotter notified them of shots fired in the 1000 block of W. Chambers Street.

A block away, near N. 10th Lane and W. Burleigh Street, officers pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation. Officers observed a handgun sitting on the passenger seat, and the driver, a 44-year-old man admitted he fired shots into the air minutes before he was pulled over.

As they were speaking with the man, officers noticed he was slurring his speech, and a strong odor of alcohol could be detected.

The 44-year-old man failed a field sobriety test, and he was arrested for OWI (second offense), endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct while armed.

Charges are being referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.
