Busted: Suspect in carjacking, shooting arrested after pursuit, police say he was driving stolen SUV

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Police say a suspect believed to be responsible for a shooting that occurred during a carjacking near 50th and Locust Tuesday night, April 21st is now in custody.

The suspect, 17-year-old Milwaukee boy, was arrested after he led officers on a pursuit using the car stolen from a 53-year-old woman Tuesday night.

The woman was shot during the carjacking, and she suffered serious injuries.

"How can you live with shooting a 53-year-old lady? You might as well say you have no respect for your mother, your sister, or your own grandma," neighbor Damon Green said.

Police say they spotted the woman's red Chrysler Pacifica SUV in the 2300 block of N. 40th Street shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The driver refused to stop for police, and a pursuit ensued.

The 17-year-old boy crashed the SUV into a fence in the area of N. 39th Street and W. Auer Avenue -- and he then took off on foot.

Police say the boy tossed a handgun while running from officers.

He was taken into custody in the 3200 block of N. 40th Street.

The handgun was recovered. Police have learned the boy's mother reported the handgun stolen hours before the carjacking.

Police have released details as to the young suspect's criminal history. They say he recently completed probation for a 2010 armed robbery.

He has been arrested by MPD several times -- including in June 2009 for sexual assault, December of 2010 for armed robbery, March of 2012 for armed robbery, April of 2012 for violating probation, June of 2012 for escape and resisting an officer, September of 2012 for violating his probation.

This case will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for charges.

The 53-year-old woman seriously injured in the carjacking and shooting Tuesday night is expected to survive.

Ba Ba El was working on a home near 39th and Auer and saw the pursuit.

"All of a sudden, I hear a police siren. This SUV, red SUV, coming running through the stop sign and ran up in the corner yard. He had complete disregard for life, like he was on a suicide mission. It is most shocking, it is most disappointing that he would do that. Justice will run its course I'm quite sure in this case," El said.

Neighbors helped police take the boy into custody.

"The citizens came out and (told police) 'you all going the wrong way! You all going the wrong way!'" El said.

Those who live in the area where the carjacking and shooting occurred and those who witnessed the pursuit say they're tired of all the violence.

"It's time for us to take back over our community and don't be afraid to be labeled as a stool pigeon," El said.
