"It's a great day here:" Spring is in the air at the Boerner Botanical Gardens

HALES CORNERS (WITI) -- This should help make it feel more like spring -- The Boerner Botanical Gardens are now open for the season!

Saturday, April 25th, is the first day of the season for the Boerner Botanical Gardens located at 9400 Boerner Dr. in Hales Corners.

"It's a great day here," said Boerner Botanical Gardens Director, Shirley Walczak.

Some of the flowers are a little behind schedule because of the long winter. But the good news is that the gardeners are expected peak blooms around Mother's Day.

"The tulips are just about in bloom, across the way you see the peonies just starting to come up -- but at the end of May, beginning of June, they'll be in full bloom. The iris will come in bloom, the roses then start opening up, the perennials start opening up," said Walczak.

And while the sun may not be out, folks are still enjoying the garden paths.

"It's a serene area to walk through, to quietly walk through, it's also a great place to learn about plants and to see what plants you want to grow in your own backyard," said Walczak.

Which is exactly what the Zorko couple does.

"He likes to come and look at the flowers to see what he can plant in our yard. I have a garden at home, lots of flowers and plants," said Sally and Jerry Zorko, enjoying the gardens.

They are long time fans of the gardens. They had their wedding photos taken there, and now they visit often.

"It seems like there's more and more things added all the time also," said Jerry Zorko.

Like this year's first ever recycled art show.

"I'm blown away. I'm just blown away," said Education Manager, Monica Jeske.

There are 23 entries this year from folks who turned trash into treasures.

"These ideas are thought provoking but also inspiring," said Jeske.

Just what the gardens are looking for!

The winners of the recycled art show will be on display until May 11th.

Also, the gardens have several upcoming events including a Mother's Day brunch on Sunday, May 10th.
