ATLANTA (WITI) — A 17-year-old boy is in the ICU in a medically induced coma with burns over 70% of his body. His family says two men threw a pot of boiling rice on him as he slept — and this attack apparently happened over a PlayStation 3.
Damon Clay is recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
Witnesses say 19-year-old Quintavious Barber and 18-year-old Malik Moton threw a pot of boiling rice on the boy as he slept after accusing Clay of stealing a PlayStation 3.
“He’s scarred for the rest of his life. His life will never be the same,” Clay’s aunt told WSB-Tv in Atlanta.
“It’s ridiculous somebody would do a child like that,” neighbor Tamara Miller said.
Kentaveus Watson, a tenant who rents the apartment where the attack happened says he is friends with everyone involved, but he says the attack has left him shaken.
“It scared me. Ever since it happened, I’ve been sleeping on the couch right where he got burned,” Watson said.
Family members tell WSB-TV Clay had recently been released into a three-month program offered by a non-profit organization after serving time in jail for a burglary. They say a minister with the program promised a judge he’d provide shelter and guidance for Clay. His family doesn’t believe that happened.
“He didn’t have any supervision. I’d rather my nephew be in jail than here (in the ICU),” Clay’s aunt said.
Clay was expected to undergo more surgery Sunday.
WSB-TV reports Clay’s attackers are facing charges including aggravated assault and cruelty to a child.
