Judge sentences Victor Santiago to eight years in prison in fatal hit-and-run crash

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee County judge sentenced 50-year-old Victor Santiago on Monday, April 27th to eight years in prison plus another five years of extended supervision. This, in the wake of a guilty plea in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened on Milwaukee’s south side last November.

The criminal complaint against Santiago indicates officers were dispatched to the intersection of S. Cesar Chavez Dr. and Mineral St. on Milwaukee’s south side just after 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 23rd. When they arrived, they found 63-year-old Alfredo De La O in the street face down and unresponsive. Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but De La O was pronounced dead on the scene.

A short time later, officers who were saturating the area, found a white pickup truck nearby and the "right passenger side headlight appeared to be broken with the surrounding hood, grill and quarter panel also damaged." The complaint says the officer approached the vehicle and Santiago was inside. He was immediately taken into custody after officers said he appeared to have "glassy bloodshot eyes and spoke with slurred speech."

Santiago faced three criminal counts in the case including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, homicide by use of vehicle with PAC and hit-and-run involving death. On March 13th, Santiago pleaded guilty to the homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle -- and the other two charges were dismissed by the court.
